More than a GPS. Great gift for a kid.
PORTABLE GPS ETC:STANDOUTS: Stand alone touchscreen GPS that needs no cell service or subscription.IN USE: This seems like a throw back to another time in a different era of electronics. Using it is different than a modern speedy hi-res smartphone as everything is slower in a way that can seem kind of endearing. Not just a GPS this gadget has an SD card slot so it can act as a music player, picture viewer or show videos. There are even a number of games built in and it can function as a calculator. This would make a nice gift for a kid as they could use the GPS while walking and play games, listen to music, use the calculator and such throughout the day. I would guess most adults are unlikely to put down their iPhone to use this instead.SETUP: Once charged it can be setup on the dash with the provided mount or used hand held. It helps to set the language, volume and timezone to. Mine arrived set to full volume.THE DETAILS: Charges with USB-A to USB mini cable rather than USB-C.MATTERS MOST: More than a GPS. Great gift for a kid.

Good old school backup GPS
Good old school backup GPS. Picked this to review because I just wanted a backup GPS in case my phone dies or I have connectivity problems. Does what it has to do. Gets you where you need to go. Free updates. Does have some other features like an FM radio, music/video player. Didn’t try them, but they are there if you need them. But really if you need a backup, this will do the job..

Poor Viewing Angles
I have GPS navigation on my phone, but the tiny screen it often difficult to see when driving in heavy traffic so I got this to get a clearer image on my dashboard. The setup is a little confusing and somewhat tough to navigate to get all the settings correct for your area. I had to change the units from metric to imperial, set the city, change the time, input common locations to my favorites, and download several updates before finally getting to a point where I was comfortable using it. Some of the navigation is odd where it will send you down a cascade of side streets on the “shortest” route, but other times will cling to main roads and want you to pass through several long stop lights. It also seems to have updated roads but not business listings, so searching for a road address is fine but typing in the name of a restaurant that has been at a location for half a decade turns up nothing. There’s no sunshade which is shame since the screen is shiny and reflects a lot of ambient light. The screen also has a really narrow window to see things correctly and quickly flips to negative colors when looking off-center.

ITs a good backup for dead cell areas. This can save you a headache if you travel rural areas often.
I knew what I was getting when I bought this. a cheap GPS with offline maps where I don’t have to pay for updates. Thats how its advertised and that is exactly what it is. It isn’t a bad GPS by any means, its just a very basic old school GPS that tells you where you are. I got this after traveling in rural areas last year where we lost cell signal and my phone GPS no longer was able to navigate. We didn’t even have a map in the car so realized just how dependant we were on cell service. This stays in my glove box, plugged in so its charging all the time in case I do need it. I tested it a few times just to have confidence in it and it was exactly what I needed. Offline mapping without the need for cell service. I call this my digital map. Knowing its there when I need it is a huge relief. It isn’t going to compete with your cell phone GPS or in car devices that are more modern but if you find yourself in a case where those won’t work, as I did, this is going to be a lifesaver IMO. Its inexpensive and you have to plan out the maps in advance while you have connectivity to be accurate and effective. But its worth it IMO.
Just the facts –
Gets me where I’m going.
My car is past the 10-year mark, and so the maps in my built in GPS have become a bit outdated. I often find myself driving on “invisible” roads, looking for addresses that don’t show up as existing, and was once even directed right into the middle of a commercial construction site. I finally got frustrated enough, and went ahead and ordered this external GPS unit. I haven’t really had enough time yet- or interest, to be honest- to play around with all of the available features (like FM, Photos, Games, etc.), but I have gotten familiar enough to use the GPS, and so far it’s been getting me where I need to go.

Very good backup GPS unit
Nice GPS unit that functions well. I was able to get directions to local places near me and it worked well. The voice can be changed to one of the many choices, I attached a video of the one I used that is very clear and easy to understand. The unit works on satellites so it doesn’t require a subscription or cellular service. It does come with everything needed to mount this in a vehicle, including the wires and charging accessories. The unit can be charged or plugged in directly and powered from a car or its own power. There is a slot for an SD card but I didn’t need that to use the navigation and see the streets around me.Now I don’t need this in my car, I have CarPlay and a cell phone BUT this is a very well made backup that can be used if cell service went down or if I found myself somewhere I couldn’t use my phone or even my car.I’ll be keeping this in a bag to be kept for emergencies when I go on a hike.

Cheapo GPS, not fancy, good for backup nav
This very affordable dedicated GPS navigation unit is basic, of mediocre quality, the UX and map are also very old school.Don’t buy this of you a expect Waze or Google Maps experience. However, these traits are, I think, features, not detriments. I got this to have in the car as an offline backup to phone maps and in this use case, a cheap basic functional navigation tool IS PERFECT.You cannot really go wrong with this, just don’t expect miracles. It charges up, lasted at least an hour on its battery, and its map has all the main roads I use.3 stars: Recommended!
